Hyundai Engineering & Construction is expanding its footprint in the European nuclear market by joining the front-end engineering and design process for a new large nuclear power plant project in the Netherlands.

Hyundai E&C announced Thursday that it signed a Phase 1 front-end engineering and design contract with Westinghouse on Wednesday for the construction of new large nuclear power plants in the Netherlands.

The contract is part of a FEED 1 order that the Nuclear Energy Organization Netherlands (NEO NL) awarded to Westinghouse. Hyundai E&C will participate as Westinghouse's partner, carrying out basic design and project review work for the construction of two large nuclear power plants based on the AP1000 reactor.

NEO NL is a state-owned agency established by the Dutch government to advance its policy of introducing new nuclear power plants, overseeing the development of the nuclear project and preparations for its future operation.

FEED 1 represents the initial design phase of the new nuclear project, and Hyundai E&C will handle key tasks for adapting the AP1000 reactor to the Netherlands. The company's responsibilities include a technical review of candidate sites, development of a master plan and formulation of a project execution strategy. Together with Westinghouse, Hyundai E&C plans to conduct a comprehensive review of local regulations and licensing requirements, technical standards and project schedules, while also establishing risk mitigation measures and a localization strategy.

As the Dutch government conducts technical and environmental reviews of candidate sites for the new nuclear power plants, Westinghouse — which has advanced to the final technical shortlist — plans to work with Hyundai E&C on follow-on design work reflecting site characteristics and licensing conditions, with the aim of finalizing a project execution plan and construction approach.

Ahead of this contract, Hyundai E&C had been engaged in cooperative activities related to the Netherlands nuclear project. In June, the company co-hosted a Netherlands Supplier Symposium with Westinghouse, bringing together local government officials, industry representatives and nuclear-related companies to build a cooperative network and strengthen the supply chain foundation.

During the FEED process, Hyundai E&C and Westinghouse plan to combine their respective technical expertise and project capabilities to support the successful advancement of the Netherlands nuclear project and further solidify the foundation for participation in subsequent phases.

"We will build on the design and construction capabilities we have accumulated in the large nuclear power plant sector to raise the quality of project delivery and continue expanding new business opportunities in the European nuclear market," a Hyundai E&C official said.

Meanwhile, Hyundai E&C is also accelerating efforts to strengthen its competitiveness across the full nuclear lifecycle — encompassing not only construction but also decommissioning and spent nuclear fuel disposal.
