Uljin-gun in North Gyeongsang Province held the 50th Seongnyu Cultural Festival over three days from Friday through Sunday at the entrance to Seongnyu Cave, the Yeonho Cultural Center and Yeonho Park, the county announced Tuesday.
On the first day, Friday, the festival opened with a traditional rite at the entrance to Seongnyu Cave, followed by a classical Chinese poetry contest, an opening ceremony, cultural performances and a fusion traditional music concert at Yeonho Park.
Saturday's program included student writing and painting competitions, a traditional farmers' band street parade, the Wolsong tug-of-war, a guest singer performance, a tightrope-walking show by the Namchang-dong troupe and an awards ceremony for the calligraphy competition.
The final day, Sunday, featured a traditional Korean chess tournament, folk song performances, a traditional wedding demonstration, the Simnyeong Bajigekun folk play, Bongsan mask dance and a classical music concert.
Beyond the arts and performance events, the festival also offered a range of exhibitions and hands-on programs throughout the three days.
Highlights included the 24th Uljin Bongpyeong Silla Monument National Calligraphy Exhibition, fine art and photography displays, wildflower and bonsai and orchid exhibitions, pottery wheel experiences, Korean red pine woodcraft workshops and displays, a tea ceremony with tastings, and various other participatory programs.
"Building on 50 years of tradition and the values of the Seongnyu Cultural Festival, we will work to promote Uljin's outstanding cultural heritage more widely and develop the festival into a cultural celebration where residents and visitors alike can come together, enjoy themselves and connect," Uljin-gun County Chief Hwang I-ju said.
