Eunpyeong-gu in Seoul announced that the Bulgwang Zone 5 housing redevelopment project has entered the demolition phase, marking the first groundbreaking 21 years after a preparatory committee for the redevelopment association was formed in 2005.

Residents of Bulgwang Zone 5 began relocating in September last year and completed the process in about a year. Once demolition is finished, a 2,406-unit apartment complex called "Bukhansan Xi The Prestige" will be built on the site.

The zone received project implementation approval in 2021, selected GS Engineering & Construction as its contractor in 2022, and obtained management and disposal plan approval in 2024. The association plans to complete demolition by July 2027, break ground on main construction in October 2027, and finish the project by 2030.

The district will inspect construction-site safety throughout the demolition and building phases and focus on reducing inconvenience to nearby residents caused by noise, dust and construction vehicle traffic. Administrative support for the project will also continue.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday at a public parking lot in Bulgwang 1-dong, organized by the Bulgwang Zone 5 Housing Redevelopment Association and GS Engineering & Construction. Eunpyeong-gu District Mayor Kim Mi-kyung, association members and project officials attended and shared updates on the project's progress.

Meanwhile, the association donated 2,600 kilograms of rice to the local community to mark the occasion, expressing its intention to share the project's progress with neighborhood residents. The district will distribute the rice to low-income households and others in need within the borough.

"Safety is paramount above all else during demolition and construction," District Mayor Kim said. "I ask the association and the contractor to take careful measures to minimize inconvenience for nearby residents."
