Residents of Woljeong and Gonae villages in Jinwon-myeon, Jangseong-gun, South Jeolla Province, called Monday for flood damage compensation and remedial measures from Gwangju Urban Corporation and the project's developer and contractor, saying construction of the Cheomdan 3 district has caused flooding and traffic disruptions.
About 50 residents, organized under the Woljeong Village Residents' Committee, held a rally near the Cheomdan 3 district construction site in Gwangsan-gu, alleging that the urban corporation had raised the land adjacent to the village roughly 2 meters above road level — nearly double the 0.9 meters it had promised. They said the loss of low-lying rice paddies that had previously absorbed rainwater led to flooding last year.
Residents also raised concerns about what would happen once high-rise apartment buildings go up, warning of damage to views of Mudeungsan and the potential reflection and amplification of noise from a nearby shooting range. They urged authorities to conduct advance surveys and draw up a plan to address residents' concerns.
Starting Monday, residents deployed more than 20 pieces of farm equipment and vehicles — including combines, tractors and trucks — and said they would continue the protest until their demands are met.
