A climber in his 50s fell while scaling Ulsanbawi in Seoraksan National Park in Gangwon Province on Sunday afternoon and was rescued about three hours later.
The man, identified only by his surname initial A, was ascending a route known as Yobangil when he fell roughly 50 meters — from the second pitch down to the first.
He hung from a rope at the first pitch, about 60 meters above the ground, and complained of back pain from the impact of the fall.
A was climbing with five companions at the time of the accident.
A special rescue unit from Seoraksan National Park and a 119 rescue team arrived at the scene, administered first aid and moved A onto a stretcher before bringing him down to the ground.
Rescue authorities airlifted him to a nearby hospital. Officials plan to interview his companions and others to determine the circumstances of the accident.
