Daytime highs expected between 19 and 25 C; wind chill to push temperatures lower
Rain will fall across parts of the central and Jeolla regions from the early hours through the morning on Monday, the final day of the three-day holiday weekend, the Korea Meteorological Administration said Sunday. Some people who had hoped for clear skies on the substitute public holiday — marking Gaecheonjeol, National Foundation Day — may need to shift their plans toward indoor activities.
Morning lows on Monday are forecast at 11 to 17 degrees Celsius, with afternoon highs reaching 19 to 25 degrees. Cold air pushing down from the north will make conditions feel noticeably cooler by the afternoon, and the administration advised people to dress warmly.
Daytime temperatures will be about 5 degrees lower than Sunday's. Strong winds accompanying the cold air mass will push the wind chill even further below the thermometer reading.
Rain is expected to begin Sunday night across the Greater Seoul area, the northern inland areas of Gangwon Province, South Chungcheong Province and the northwestern parts of North Jeolla Province. From the early hours through the morning on Monday, showers will spread to the central regions, the Jeolla provinces, the northwestern inland areas of North Gyeongsang Province, the western inland areas of South Gyeongsang Province and Jeju Island.
Forecast rainfall totals for Monday are 5 to 30 millimeters for Incheon, northern Gyeonggi Province and the northern inland areas of Gangwon Province; 5 to 20 mm for other inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon Province; and 5 to 10 mm for Seoul, southern Gyeonggi Province, Ulleungdo and Dokdo.
Daejeon, Sejong, South Chungcheong Province and North Chungcheong Province can expect around 5 mm, while North Jeolla Province, Gwangju, South Jeolla Province, the western inland areas of South Gyeongsang Province, the northwestern inland areas of North Gyeongsang Province and Jeju Island are forecast to receive less than 5 mm.
In areas where rain falls between Sunday night and Monday morning, there is a chance of lightning and gusty winds. Graupel — ice pellets smaller than 0.5 centimeters in diameter — may also fall in parts of the central west coast, northern inland Gyeonggi Province and the northern inland areas of Gangwon Province.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said strong gusts of up to about 55 kilometers per hour are expected across most of the country from Monday through Tuesday morning, with mountain areas seeing gusts of up to around 70 kph.
With summer heat behind us and large daily temperature swings typical of autumn, people should pay close attention to their health. During extended holiday periods in particular, it is advisable to keep on hand the contact information for pharmacies and medical clinics that remain open on public holidays and late at night.
