The district was recognized for advancing substantive gender equality and building leading care and welfare infrastructure... Dongdaemun-gu District Mayor Choi Dong-min: "We will create a 'new Dongdaemun' where every resident is respected without discrimination"
Seoul's Dongdaemun-gu received the Ministry of Health and Welfare Minister Award at the 4th Gender Equality Policy Prize, hosted by Women's News and the National Network of Women Local Assembly Members, in recognition of its outstanding achievements in gender equality and welfare policy.
The Gender Equality Policy Prize is awarded to local governments and assemblies across the country that have actively pursued substantive gender equality policies — including spreading a culture of gender equality, expanding women's participation in society, and building work-family balance and care safety nets.
Dongdaemun-gu has made the creation of a gender-equal city where all residents thrive across genders and generations a core priority. In this year's evaluation, the district was recognized for initiatives promoting shared parenting culture — including a one-on-one father parenting consultation program and expanded part-time and specialized childcare services — as well as its public-private-police safety network offering residents a safe-return escort service.
Alongside this, the district received high marks for spreading everyday gender equality culture through outreach gender-sensitivity education and a Gender Equality Week event.
Judges also took note of the district's gender-equal administrative framework spanning both public and private sectors, which has tangibly improved residents' quality of life.
"This Ministry of Health and Welfare Minister Award is a meaningful achievement made together by the residents and public servants of Dongdaemun-gu," Dongdaemun-gu District Mayor Choi Dong-min said. "We will continue to deepen the roots of gender equality culture in everyday life and do our utmost to make Dongdaemun-gu a place where children can thrive and all residents can feel safe and supported."
