Damyang-gun is redirecting its eco-trail project around Damyang Lake, shifting from a planned pedestrian bridge to a circular trail network that connects the entire lakeshore, in a bid to boost tourism in the area.
The county had originally considered building a pedestrian bridge — tentatively named "Mirugyo" — across the lake. Detailed ground surveys and design work revealed that the water depth, subsurface conditions and flood levels would require additional spending on temporary construction equipment and foundation work to ensure safety.
In response, the county consulted with relevant agencies and conducted a comprehensive review of costs and safety concerns, ultimately scrapping the bridge-centered plan in favor of a circular eco-trail linking existing paths around the lake.
The revised project, budgeted at 14 billion won ($10.3 million), will connect fragmented forest paths and waterside walkways around Damyang Lake and establish a trail network linking nearby villages and the Yongmaru-gil trail.
Plans also call for a waterside walkway offering views of the lake and an artificial waterfall, along with lighting installations and reinforced safety facilities along the entire trail.
Alongside this, the county will gradually develop parking areas and waterfront parks to improve conditions for tourists and draw visitors into nearby villages and local commercial districts.
The county held a public information session at the Yongmyeon community office on Sept. 22, explaining the reasons for the change and the key plans, and gathering feedback from residents and village heads.
Input from the session will be reviewed during the upcoming basic and detailed design phases. The county plans to break ground in 2027 and complete the project in 2029, following the necessary administrative procedures and consultations with relevant agencies.
