Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy calls for submissions on inter-departmental and public-private partnerships that improved livestock environmental management

Two categories, six awards total — purse of 7 million won

The Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy and the Livestock Environment Management Institute announced they will accept submissions for a best-practices competition on livestock environmental collaboration from Thursday through Oct. 30.

Now in its third year, the competition aims to identify outstanding cases in which local government environment and livestock departments, or local governments working alongside private partners, have improved livestock environmental conditions — with winning entries to be reflected in policy and used as education and promotional materials.

Submissions are accepted in two categories: cases in which local government environment and livestock departments collaborated to reform systems or procedures and drive innovation in livestock environmental management; and cases in which those departments partnered with public institutions, producer organizations, regional councils, universities or farms to achieve results such as improved livestock waste treatment, reduced odor or water pollution, or resolution of community conflicts.

Submitted entries will be evaluated and three winners selected per category, for a total of six. The grand prize carries the Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy minister's commendation and a cash award of 2 million won ($1,470), while the excellence and merit prizes carry the Livestock Environment Management Institute director's commendation and awards of 1 million won and 500,000 won, respectively — bringing the total purse to 7 million won.

Local governments and related organizations wishing to participate may submit an application form and proposal by email no later than 6 p.m. on Oct. 30.

Winning entries will be used as model collaboration cases for education and promotional purposes by local governments going forward.

Jo Hyeon-su, director of water environment policy at the Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy, said the most effective improvements to livestock environmental issues related to animal waste come "when environment departments, livestock departments and local communities work together to find solutions." Jo added that the ministry would "actively identify collaboration cases with proven results in the field and work to spread them so other regions can benefit as well."

Full details and submission forms are available on the websites of the Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy and the Livestock Environment Management Institute; inquiries may be directed to the institute.
