Province holds interim briefing Wednesday on control strategy study, aims to build systematic response tailored to local damage levels and forest conditions
South Chungcheong Province is moving closer to finalizing a region-specific strategy to combat pine wilt disease tailored to local conditions across the province.
The provincial government held an interim briefing Wednesday at a meeting room in the provincial office on a study to establish a pine wilt disease control strategy. The session was chaired by Kim Yeong-myeong, director general of the climate, environment and forestry bureau, and drew about 50 participants, including officials from the Korea Forest Service, related agencies, county and city governments, forestry experts and the research firm conducting the study.
The study aims to develop a South Chungcheong-specific control strategy aligned with the Korea Forest Service's national control plan for 2026–2030, moving beyond simply removing damaged trees to build a systematic response framework that accounts for the extent of damage and forest conditions in each area.
At the briefing, participants shared analysis on the current spread and damage caused by pine wilt disease across the province, including how the disease is expanding in different regions. They also exchanged views on control strategies suited to South Chungcheong's circumstances, covering management of the disease's leading edge, region-specific control directions based on damage severity, and protection of key pine forests.
Participants agreed that, since the extent of damage and patterns of spread vary by region even within the province, a differentiated approach is needed — concentrating control resources in heavily affected areas while strengthening precision monitoring and early response in areas at risk of further spread.
The province plans to incorporate feedback from the Korea Forest Service, local governments and experts presented at the briefing into the study, and to refine regional control priorities and detailed action plans through additional field investigations and analysis.
Particularly in severely affected areas, the province intends to concentrate its control capacity while proactively managing areas at risk of spread — deploying limited control resources as efficiently as possible to halt the advance of pine wilt disease and restore disease-free zones.
"Because the extent of damage and forest conditions differ from region to region, it is important to move away from a one-size-fits-all approach and adopt strategies tailored to local characteristics," Kim said. "We will faithfully reflect the opinions of experts and local governments presented at this interim briefing to develop a South Chungcheong-style control strategy that can be put to practical use in the field."
