The ceremony at Yu Gwan-sun's burial site in Mangwoo History and Culture Park featured memorial addresses, flower offerings and performances honoring her spirit of independence
Jungnang-gu held the 106th memorial ceremony for independence activist Yu Gwan-sun on Monday, the anniversary of her death, at her burial site in Mangwoo History and Culture Park.
Co-hosted by Jungnang-gu and the Yu Gwan-sun Memorial Project Association, the ceremony drew about 100 attendees, including District Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi, officials from the memorial association, Seoul and district lawmakers, the head of the Seoul Northern Veterans Affairs Office, the chair of the Korean Liberation Association's Jungnang-gu chapter, the principal and alumni association of Ewha Girls' High School, and local residents.
The program included memorial addresses, flower offerings, a message-writing station, commemorative performances and a three-cheers salute. A children's performance group called Daehan Ai, made up of local children, performed a tribute to Yu, while the Independence Heroes Hanullim Choir — composed of descendants of independence movement figures — honored her memory in song.
"I hope this 106th memorial ceremony will help spread the noble spirit of Yu Gwan-sun, who endured a turbulent era with her whole being," District Mayor Ryu said. "We will work together with residents to reflect on the historical significance of Mangwoo History and Culture Park, so that the lives and spirit of Yu and other independence activists are never forgotten, and to nurture it as a cherished historical and cultural space."
