Company says product lowers mucus viscosity to aid phlegm expulsion
Gyeongnam Pharmaceutical launched Garencool Capsule, a cough suppressant and expectorant for acute and chronic respiratory conditions, on Tuesday.
The product's active ingredient, erdosteine, protects the respiratory mucosa and reduces mucus viscosity. It also promotes ciliary movement in the bronchi to help expel phlegm more effectively, the company said.
Available over the counter, adults take one capsule two to three times daily. The product should not be taken for more than 10 consecutive days in cases of acute respiratory illness, the company said.
Healthy respiratory mucosa secretes a certain amount of mucus to protect the bronchi from pathogens. When inflammation develops in the bronchi, mucus secretion increases abnormally, leading to greater phlegm production. Excessive phlegm is known to cause a sensation of obstruction in the airways and persistent coughing.
"We expect the product to improve the quality of life for patients with acute and chronic respiratory conditions such as seasonal colds and asthma," the company said.
