Registration open by dong through Oct. 16; event set for Nov. 7 at Mangwon Reservoir Sports Park
Five team events — including a giant baton relay and tug-of-war — plus bonus games round out the program
Mapo-gu is accepting registrations by dong through Oct. 16 for the 2nd Mapo-gu Community Sports Day.
Hosted and organized by the Mapo-gu Sports Council and sponsored by the district office, the event will be held at 10 a.m. on Nov. 7 at Mangwon Reservoir Sports Park, with the aim of promoting residents' health and community spirit.
This year's program has expanded the lineup of events that families, friends and neighbors can enjoy together, making the day accessible to participants of all ages.
The program features five team events and two bonus games. The team events are a giant baton relay race, an ad balloon roll, tug-of-war, a board-flipping contest and a giant centipede race.
In the giant baton relay, each dong fields a mixed team of six — one man each from their 50s, 40s and 20s, and one woman each from their 40s and 30s — who carry an oversized baton around the course together.
The ad balloon roll and tug-of-war are group events in which 15 men and 15 women from each dong compete simultaneously, giving participants of all ages a chance to work up a sweat and build camaraderie.
The board-flipping contest draws five men and five women per dong, while the giant centipede race fields eight men per dong.
The two bonus games are a pedometer challenge and shoe archery. Both are run as quick-turnaround contests, and results count toward each dong's overall score, adding excitement and suspense to the day.
After all events conclude, scores will be tallied to determine an overall ranking by dong, and top-performing dong will receive awards.
Residents seeking more information about fielding a team can contact the Mapo-gu Sports Council or their dong organizing committee at the local community center.
Meanwhile, the district plans to minimize waste at the venue by actively using reusable containers and other measures to cut single-use plastics.
"I hope the community sports day gives more residents a chance to experience the joy of exercise and grow closer to their neighbors," Mapo-gu District Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun said. "We will consistently create opportunities for residents to come together and connect, building a healthy and vibrant Mapo."
