Deposits reach 100.98 trillion won after five trading days
Investor deposits — funds parked in brokerage accounts awaiting investment — surpassed the 100 trillion won ($73.5 billion) mark on Wednesday, recovering the threshold just five trading days after falling below it, as the domestic stock market regained momentum with the Kospi closing above 7,000.
According to the Korea Financial Investment Association, investor deposits totaled 100.98 trillion won on Wednesday — returning above the 100 trillion won level for the first time in five trading days since reaching 105.33 trillion won on Sept. 15.
Deposits had fallen for two consecutive sessions — to 99.06 trillion won on Sept. 16 and 97.49 trillion won on Thursday — and remained below the 100 trillion won threshold on Friday and Monday at 98.33 trillion won and 98.14 trillion won, respectively.
Analysts attributed the rebound to a revival in investor sentiment, as the Kospi extended its rally through Wednesday after recrossing the 7,000 mark on Monday for the first time since Sept. 10, when it closed at 7,033.92. The benchmark index ended Wednesday's session up 0.90 percent at 7,080.92.
The balance of margin loans — a gauge of debt-financed investing — fell to 32.82 trillion won on Wednesday from 33.06 trillion won on Tuesday. The balance has hovered in the 32 trillion to 33 trillion won range recently, having climbed back gradually after dropping to 27.4 trillion won on Aug. 4 from a record high of 38.63 trillion won set on June 24.
Outstanding unsettled receivables from short-term margin trading fell to 853.7 billion won from 872.2 billion won the previous session. Forced liquidations stemming from unpaid receivables amounted to 3.7 billion won, representing 0.4 percent of total outstanding receivables.
