A woman in her 50s has been arrested for fatally stabbing her elderly mother during the Chuseok holiday in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, police said Saturday.

The Ansan Sangnok Police Station arrested the suspect, identified only as A, on charges of matricide at around 1 a.m. Saturday and is investigating the case.

A is accused of attacking her mother with a bladed weapon inside a multi-unit residential building in Sangnok-gu, Ansan.

She reportedly told an acquaintance about the attack immediately afterward, and the acquaintance called police, leading to her arrest at the scene.

Her mother was taken to a hospital while receiving CPR but ultimately died.

Both women are Chinese nationals of Korean-Chinese descent. A had been living with her mother in the residence and was found to have consumed a bottle of soju before the attack.

A told police she had been drinking and fell asleep before her mother came home. She said an argument broke out over her lifestyle, leading her to act impulsively, according to investigators.

Police are continuing to investigate the full circumstances of the incident.
