Seoul's Nowon-gu has been selected as a pilot district for OnAI, an intelligent work management platform being rolled out by the Ministry of Interior and Safety, the district announced Friday. The district plans to use the designation to accelerate the AI transformation of its public administration.

A total of eight metropolitan cities and provinces and 46 cities, counties and districts nationwide were chosen for the pilot program. In Seoul, Nowon-gu, Dobong-gu and Seodaemun-gu are participating.

OnAI integrates generative AI into administrative operations within a secure environment, supporting staff in searching laws, guidelines and administrative materials, aggregating and analyzing data, and drafting documents. The platform also reduces repetitive tasks — such as automatically generating and summarizing meeting minutes linked to video conferences — so employees can focus on core work.

Since the launch of the ninth elected administration, the district has actively pursued an AI transformation aimed not merely at improving efficiency but at overhauling how public administration operates as a whole. It has been laying the groundwork for a phased rollout by examining the potential of new AI-based work systems and reviewing their compatibility with existing administrative systems and security requirements.

Nowon-gu proactively introduced NowonGPT, its own generative AI platform, to all staff in March. As of this month, 1,150 of the district's 1,584 employees have signed up, meaning more than 70 percent of the workforce is using the tool. The district now plans to formally accelerate its AI-driven administrative overhaul by extending that reach to the government's intelligent work platform.

After surveying departments on their demand for OnAI access, the district plans to roll out about 500 accounts from next month through the end of the year, then develop a concrete plan for broader use of the intelligent work management platform next year.
