Eco-friendly vehicles registered in the former South Jeolla Province area will become eligible for toll discounts on Gwangju's Second Ring Road starting in October.

The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City announced Wednesday that it will expand the Second Ring Road's eco-friendly vehicle toll discount to cover all environmentally friendly vehicles — including electric, hydrogen and solar-powered cars — registered anywhere within the Jeonnam-Gwangju area.

Previously, only eco-friendly vehicles registered in Gwangju qualified for the benefit. The expansion extends eligibility to those registered in South Jeolla Province.

Toll discounts for vehicles belonging to disability organizations will continue to apply to vehicles registered anywhere in the country, as before.

The expansion takes effect following the passage of the "Jeonnam-Gwangju City Ordinance on the Collection and Operation of Paid Road Tolls" at a plenary session of the integrated city council on Friday.

The discount rate will be adjusted in phases, taking into account the central government's eco-friendly vehicle toll discount policy under the Paid Roads Act and practices at other toll operators nationwide.

The current 50 percent discount will remain in place through Dec. 31, after which the rate will drop to 30 percent starting Jan. 1.

Drivers of small vehicles will pay 600 won this year and 840 won from next year onward.

Mid-size vehicle drivers will pay 1,150 won this year and 1,610 won next year, while large vehicle drivers will pay 1,450 won this year and 2,030 won next year.

Application windows for the discount will be expanded from the existing Gwangju office to include the Muan and East offices, to improve convenience and administrative accessibility for residents.
