Busan city announced Wednesday it has completed a 2.9 billion won ($2.13 million) project to build a real-time intersection information service and will expand its AI-based traffic management system starting this month. The project was carried out as part of a smart village development and expansion initiative.

The system uses AI to collect and analyze traffic conditions in real time, integrating signal data and information on vehicles carrying hazardous materials to improve traffic flow and enhance intersection safety. The expansion covers what the city calls an Intelligent Transport System.

One key component is a flood detection system for intersections. Flood-detection algorithms have been installed at 11 high-risk intersections to identify flooding caused by heavy rainfall and provide drivers with detour and traffic control information, helping prevent secondary accidents.

The city has also expanded its real-time signal information infrastructure to improve safety at intersections by reducing speeding and stop-line violations. The infrastructure has been providing signal status and countdown information through major mobile navigation apps — including Kakao Navi, Naver Maps and T-map — as well as Hyundai Motor's Bluelink and Kia's connected-car navigation systems in the Centum district since January last year. It has now been extended to 25 intersections along Yeonsu-ro, Suyeong-ro and Chungyeol-daero.

The city is also adding more smart intersections and deploying real-time signal control and smart adaptive signal systems to optimize signal timing and ease traffic congestion.

Pilot operations showed that the real-time signal control system reduced intersection delay times by more than 10 percent, while the smart adaptive signal system cut delays by 36 percent. The city expects similar improvements at eight newly built major intersections where unnecessary signal time will be reduced.

Mayor Jeon Jae-soo said the city would "continuously upgrade its traffic service model tailored to Busan's conditions and characteristics to create a safe traffic environment that residents can feel in their daily lives."
