Global market trends, domestic expansion challenges on the agenda

The Korea Federation of Enterprises announced Wednesday that it will co-host a seminar titled "Data Centers in the AI Era: Present and Future" with National Assembly Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee Chairman Song Ki-heon on Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. at the FKI Tower Conference Center in Yeouido, Seoul.

The seminar was organized to examine global data center market trends and major countries' policy developments, and to discuss the direction and policy challenges for expanding South Korea's data center industry — amid efforts to establish data center construction as one of three national mega-projects. The federation has been holding a series of seminars and policy discussions on key issues surrounding advanced industries, including AI, semiconductors and energy.

In the presentation segment, Kim Na-young, a consulting director at Wood Mackenzie, will speak on "Global Data Center Trends, Key Policy Changes and Implications." Lee Je-hoon, a researcher at the federation's New K-Industries team, will examine the current state of domestic data centers under the theme "The AI Transition: Distribution of Domestic Data Centers and Implications for Expansion."

A panel discussion will follow, moderated by Jung Chul, the federation's chief research officer and president of the Korea Economic Research Institute. Participants will include Park Chan-kook, a professor at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies; Jang Ki-chul, director of the AI and Data Promotion Division at the Ministry of Science and ICT; Jang Hye-deok, chief executive of Equinix Korea; and Shin Dong-hyun, a research fellow at the Korea Energy Economics Institute. The panel is expected to discuss the direction of the domestic data center industry's development and avenues for public-private cooperation.
