Hyundai Motor's management and union held a chuseok shopping event at Hogye Market in Buk-gu, Ulsan, on Monday, donating 90 million won ($65,000) in community contribution funds to the Ulsan Volunteer Center and the Ulsan branch of the Community Chest of Korea.

The funds will be used to purchase holiday gift sets and Onuri gift vouchers — a government-backed voucher redeemable at traditional markets — from the market, then distributed to 1,000 low-income households and more than 80 welfare facilities in the Ulsan area.

Hyundai Motor CEO Choi Young-il and Lee Jong-cheol, head of the Korean Metal Workers' Union's Hyundai Motor chapter, attended the event, along with Ulsan Mayor Kim Sang-uk, National Assembly member Yun Jong-o and Buk-gu District Chief Lee Dong-gwon. The group purchased fruit and other goods at Hogye Market to show support for local merchants.

The event was part of a cooperative initiative between Ulsan city and the Hyundai Motor factory in Ulsan under a regional co-growth council, carried out through a community partnership platform that directly connects companies with traditional markets.

Hyundai Motor's labor and management have consistently held community sharing events every Lunar New Year and chuseok since 2011. Cumulative donations have reached 17 billion won, while cumulative purchases of traditional market gift vouchers have totaled 151.5 billion won.
