500 million won in scholarships this year — 310 general recipients and 20 recommended recipients selected
Open applications for 310 general scholarships accepted Monday through Oct. 16 at dong community centers or by registered mail
Yangcheon-gu will select 330 scholarship recipients this year and award a total of 500 million won ($361,000) to help students living in airport noise-affected areas continue their studies without disruption.
One beneficiary of the program, a student at Gwangyeong Girls' High School selected last year as an athletics scholarship recipient, balanced her studies with judo training and won four individual titles in the 70-kilogram division at national competitions. The scholarship motivated her to pursue both academics and training more intensively, and she eventually entered university through a sports talent admissions track. She is now competing as a member of the youth national team.
To give students in noise-affected areas the opportunity to pursue their goals, the district will select 310 recipients through open applications for a general scholarship and 20 through principal recommendations for a recommended scholarship, for a combined total of 330 recipients.
The general scholarship is open to high school and university students who have lived continuously for at least one year — as of Sept. 14 — in Yangcheon-gu's airport noise control zone or adjacent areas with a noise exposure level (Lden) of 57 or above. Eligible residential areas include all of Sinwol 1, 3, 4, 6 and 7-dong, and parts of Sinwol 2 and 5-dong and Sinjeong 1, 3, 4 and 7-dong.
Within the number of slots allocated per dong, the district will evaluate applicants based on length of residence in the noise-affected area and whether they come from households with multiple children, selecting 133 high school students and 177 university students. Successful recipients will receive 1 million won for high school students and 2 million won for university students.
Applications are accepted from Monday through Oct. 16. Applicants may visit the dong community center with jurisdiction over their registered address or submit documents by registered mail. For details on required documents and other specifics, applicants may contact the Yangcheon-gu Airport Noise Countermeasures Comprehensive Support Center.
A recommended scholarship is also available for student athletes and students attending schools in areas with particularly severe noise exposure (Lden of 66 or above). Twenty recipients will be selected through principal recommendations that take into account household circumstances and conduct. Elementary and middle school students will receive 500,000 won, while high school students will receive 1 million won. Final recipients for both the general and recommended scholarships will be determined in November, with payments disbursed on Nov. 30.
The district has run the scholarship program since 2018 to help students in airport noise-affected areas focus on their studies and prepare for their futures. To date, it has provided approximately 2.99 billion won in scholarships to 2,026 students.
The district also operates the Airport Noise Countermeasures Comprehensive Support Center, which runs practical assistance programs for residents in and around the noise control zone, including hearing examinations, hearing aid support and Gimpo Airport usage fee subsidies.
"I hope this scholarship serves as a solid source of encouragement for students in airport noise-affected areas as they develop their potential and prepare for the futures they want," Yangcheon-gu District Mayor Lee Ki-jae said. "We will continue to identify support measures that make a real difference for students and residents, and work to ease the lifestyle inconveniences and burdens caused by airport noise."
