Yeongdeok-gun in North Gyeongsang Province announced Monday that the Ganggu Maritime Bridge, connecting Ganggu 4-ri and Samsa-ri in Ganggu-myeon, will open at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

North Gyeongsang Province broke ground on the project in November 2021 and completed it after four years and 10 months at a total cost of 51.6 billion won ($37.4 million).

The bridge stretches 1.5 kilometers in total length and 13 meters in width, carrying two lanes of traffic in both directions. The maritime section spans 527 meters.

It crosses Ganggu Port, linking the Yeongdeok Snow Crab Street area with Samsa Maritime Park.

The bridge was designed with a main span of 117 meters to reduce the number of piers placed in the water. It also features observation decks overlooking Donghae and Ganggu Port, nighttime lighting and symbolic sculptures.

The Korean Society of Steel Construction recognized the bridge for its structural integrity and design sensitivity to the surrounding environment, naming it the Steel Structure of the Year 2026.

"The opening of the Ganggu Maritime Bridge creates a new travel corridor between Ganggu and Samsa, giving residents and tourists far more options for getting around," Yeongdeok-gun Mayor Jo Ju-hong said. "Even after the opening, we will closely monitor traffic flow and facility conditions to ensure that residents and visitors can use it safely."
