Ministry of Employment and Labor, Korea Employment Information Service to hold online hackathon
Submissions accepted through Oct. 13; top results may be incorporated into live service
South Korea is inviting the public to develop new AI-powered features for Goyong24, the national integrated employment services portal.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor and the Korea Employment Information Service announced Monday they are hosting the "Goyong24 Public Participation AI Employment Service Discovery Online Hackathon," with team registration open from Monday through 6 p.m. on Oct. 13.
The hackathon is designed to move participants beyond simply proposing service improvements and into the actual development process. The goal is to use public data to uncover AI-driven employment services that people can tangibly benefit from.
The competition theme is "planning and proof-of-concept development of new or improved AI-based employment services." Participants must analyze the Goyong24 platform to identify areas needing improvement and build a minimum viable product with core functions that actually work.
Participants may draw on publicly available data sources including the Goyong24 Open API, the Employment Insurance Statistics system, the Employment and Labor Data Service and the public data portal. Where internal non-public Goyong24 data is needed, synthetic data similar to the real data may be substituted.
The competition is open to South Korean citizens aged 19 or older who are interested in service planning and development. Residents in South Korea may enter individually or in teams of two to four; companies are not eligible. Each team may submit only one idea.
Judging will proceed in three stages. The first round evaluates written proposals and selects 20 teams; a second round assesses the core functions of each team's developed web service to determine the 10 finalists. The final round judges presentations and live service demonstrations.
The grand prize winner will receive the Minister of Employment and Labor Award and 3 million won ($2,170), while the top excellence award winner will receive the Korea Employment Information Service President's Award and 2 million won. The total purse, including excellence, encouragement and participation prizes, is 10 million won ($7,240).
The final presentations and awards ceremony are scheduled for Nov. 27. The ministry and the Korea Employment Information Service plan to review incorporating standout results into Goyong24, linking the competition directly to real service improvements.
