Dongducheon appointed Lee Eun-jun as the successor instructor for Tapdong Sangyeo and Hoedaji Sori — the city's Intangible Heritage No. 4 — and presented him with an appointment certificate on Tuesday.
Lee has served as a lead singer of Tapdong Sangyeo and Hoedaji Sori since 2001, accumulating roughly 25 years of experience. Beyond performing, he has spent that period overseeing the tradition's overall operations and training the next generation of practitioners, earning recognition as the right person to carry the heritage forward.
Tapdong Sangyeo and Hoedaji Sori is a traditional funeral ritual chant passed down in the Nangmoru area of Tapdong, Dongducheon. The city formally recognized its cultural value in 2022, designating it Intangible Heritage No. 4.
In his new role, Lee will oversee systematic education to transmit the tradition, lead training programs for aspiring practitioners, and run public education programs to raise awareness of the chant's value and broaden its reach.
"Through this appointment, I expect our city's precious intangible heritage — Tapdong Sangyeo and Hoedaji Sori — to be passed on to future generations in a more stable and professional manner," Dongducheon Mayor Park Hyeong-deok said. "We will continue to spare no support for the preservation and revitalization of local traditional culture."
