As movie theater visits rise, the district strengthens safety management at cultural facilities ahead of the chuseok holiday — joint public-private inspections covering architecture, fire safety and electrical systems run from Monday through Sunday, with follow-up on repairs and reinforcements
Yongsan-gu in Seoul has launched safety inspections of performance venues and movie theaters in the district ahead of the chuseok holiday, aiming to ensure residents can enjoy cultural outings safely.
The district will conduct joint public-private safety inspections from Monday through Sunday. The checks are designed to identify hazards at individual facilities and verify safety management conditions in anticipation of higher visitor numbers during the holiday period.
Each inspection team consists of three members — a civil servant in charge and private-sector specialists in architecture, fire safety and electrical systems. Teams visit facilities in person and assess the maintenance and management status of structures and safety equipment using sector-specific checklists.
Key inspection items cover three areas: facility safety management, structural integrity and finishing conditions in the architecture category; the condition of fire extinguishers, fire hydrants, sprinklers, and alarm and evacuation equipment in the fire safety category; and leakage breakers, wiring breakers, wiring, electrical machinery and grounding status in the electrical category.
Particular attention will be paid to factors that could impede visitor movement, given that these facilities handle large numbers of moviegoers entering and exiting at the same time. Inspectors will focus closely on the management of evacuation routes and emergency exits to ensure smooth evacuation in an emergency. The maintenance and normal operation of fire suppression systems will also be checked as a precaution against fires and other disasters.
Minor issues identified during inspections will be flagged for immediate on-site correction. Where urgent safety measures are needed, the district will prohibit use of the affected area and require immediate remediation of hazards. Facilities requiring repairs or reinforcement will be ordered to make improvements, and the district will follow up to confirm that corrective actions have been carried out.
In addition, inspectors will review whether each facility has a designated safety manager and an emergency contact network in place, and will urge facility operators to comply with safety regulations and follow established emergency response procedures.
Yongsan-gu also conducted safety inspections of performance venues and movie theaters during this year's Lunar New Year holiday and summer season. The district said it will continue to monitor safety management conditions at cultural facilities during holidays and peak leisure periods and work to prevent safety accidents.
"We are conducting thorough checks so that residents who want to enjoy performances and films during the chuseok holiday can use these facilities with peace of mind," Yongsan-gu District Mayor Kim Kyung-dae said. "We will not overlook even minor hazards and will work to create a safe environment at cultural facilities."
