The Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology received the highest number of undergraduate applicants in its history during the early admissions round for the 2027 academic year.
A total of 9,208 students applied for 322 spots in the early admissions cycle, yielding a competition ratio of 28.6 to 1, DGIST said Tuesday.
That is the highest competition ratio among the four national science and technology institutes in South Korea.
The number of available seats grew from 222 last year to 322 this year, an increase of 100. Applications rose by 3,026 — about 49 percent — from 6,182 to 9,208, and the competition ratio climbed from last year's 27.85 to 1.
By admissions track, the equal-opportunity track posted the highest ratio at 55.6 to 1. The general track's basic undergraduate program drew 4,229 applicants for 100 seats, a ratio of 42.29 to 1.
The AI college, which accepted its first undergraduate class this year, attracted 1,521 applicants for 100 seats, a ratio of 15.21 to 1.
"The simultaneous rise in both applicants and competition ratios, even as we expanded enrollment, reflects the expectations students have for DGIST's educational competitiveness and growth potential," said Jo Yong-cheol, head of DGIST's admissions office.
