Daegu Mayor Choo Kyung-ho called Tuesday for a workplace culture in which employees are fairly evaluated for their efforts, urging city staff to work together to deliver "changes and results that citizens can actually feel."
Speaking at a senior staff meeting at the Sangyeok office, Choo put "fairness" at the center of his remarks, saying an organization can only be competitive when work assignments, performance rewards and personnel evaluations are all conducted fairly and transparently.
He added that while capable employees sometimes end up shouldering a disproportionate share of the workload, such situations should not be allowed to persist. "Work must be redistributed in a reasonable way, and those employees deserve proper recognition and consideration," he said.
"An organization where hard-working people end up worse off must never be allowed to exist," Choo said. "We must become an organization where those who work are recognized and those who deliver results are fairly rewarded."
He also asked senior officials to pay close attention to employees' health and workload, and to bring cases of sustained overwork directly to him so that schedules could be adjusted.
Choo also issued a special call for building public consensus and unity around major pending issues, including the administrative merger of Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province, the Daegu-North Gyeongsang new airport project, and the second round of public institution relocations.
Closing the meeting, Choo said Daegu's current state did not emerge overnight but is the accumulated result of history. "How we act from this point forward will determine what new history we can create," he said.
