A man in his 60s who fired a gas gun at a woman in her 30s after she refused his advances at a drinking gathering has received a suspended prison sentence.

Judge Hwang Yun-cheol of Incheon District Court's Criminal Division 10 on Tuesday sentenced A (64), indicted on charges of aggravated assault and violations of the Act on the Safety Management of Firearms, Swords, Explosives and the Like, to one year in prison, suspended for two years.

The court also ordered A to complete 120 hours of community service.

A is accused of firing a gas gun eight times at the back of the head and face of a woman identified as B (34) at a bar in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon, at around 11 p.m. on Jan. 27. He fired the weapon — purchased from an online shopping mall — after B refused his request for a kiss.

The two had met for the first time that evening and were drinking together.

The court said it weighed the fact that the defendant had not been forgiven by the victim and had multiple prior criminal convictions, while also noting that he had no prior convictions for similar offenses and that the victim's injuries were not severe.
