Coupang Inc said Tuesday it has officially launched an Information Security Advisory Committee composed of external experts, as a follow-up measure to a personal data leak.

The company formed the committee to build an objective and reliable information security framework, with plans to independently verify its internal security policies and raise overall security standards.

The committee will monitor the latest developments in information security laws and regulations, track emerging security threats, and advise on the company's security issues and policies. Coupang Inc plans to incorporate the committee's recommendations into its internal security policies and operational processes to establish industry-leading security standards.

The seven-member panel draws on external expertise in information security, law, management and IT. Co-chairs are Heo Seong-uk, chairman of the CPO Forum and a former director of network policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT and former head of the National IT Industry Promotion Agency, and Brett Mattis, Coupang Inc's chief information security officer.

The other members are Kang Yu-min, an advisor at Kim & Chang; Kwak Jin, a professor at Ajou University; Kim Hyeon-gyeong, a professor at Seoul National University of Science and Technology; Ahn Jeong-ho, an attorney at Bae, Kim & Lee; Yang Je-yeol, a professor at Kyung Hee University; and Jang Hang-bae, a professor at Chung-Ang University.

The committee held its inaugural meeting Tuesday and agreed to convene regular quarterly sessions going forward. Members reviewed the company's recent activities related to customer data protection.

"We will continuously work to improve our security framework by fully drawing on the outstanding experience and knowledge of top experts," a Coupang Inc official said. "We will make efforts that go beyond global standards."
