Donghae, a city in Gangwon Province, is rapidly emerging as a premier workcation destination where remote workers can combine business travel with leisure and tourism.
The city is now launching its second-half workcation program after exceeding its first-half targets.
Drawing on satisfaction surveys from the first half of the year, the city has improved its work and accommodation facilities and will offer locally tailored experiences — including surfing, singing bowl meditation, pottery and Pilates — along with cultural tourism guides and participation incentives. Applications are accepted through "The Holiday," a dedicated workcation platform.
For the second half of the year, Donghae is focusing its workcation program on boosting weekday and off-season tourism demand. Mangsang Auto Camping Resort and Donghae Ocean City Residence will serve as accommodation hubs, with shared workspaces also available nearby.
"Building on our first-half results, we will develop workcation into a tourism product that extends visitors' stays and increases local spending, providing real support for the city's commercial districts on weekdays and during the off-season," said Lee Jin-hwa, head of the tourism division.
During the first half of this year, 127 participants took part — including employees from public institutions, companies, schools, research organizations and freelancers — surpassing the original target of 100 by 27 percent. Participants spent an average of 160,000 won ($119) locally per person, with the highest reaching 500,000 won, confirming the potential economic impact of stay-based tourism on the local economy.
