A man in his 60s who stabbed his wife and mother-in-law multiple times just two days after being released on parole has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for attempted murder.

The 11th Criminal Division of the Ulsan District Court, presided over by Chief Judge Park Dong-gyu, sentenced the defendant, identified only as A, to 14 years in prison on attempted murder charges, according to Yonhap.

In the early hours of last March, A went to his mother-in-law's home, where his wife B was staying. When no one answered the door, he smashed a glass door and forced his way inside. He then stabbed B more than 10 times in the chest and arms with a weapon he had brought with him. When that weapon broke, he retrieved another from inside the home and continued attacking her. He also stabbed his mother-in-law multiple times when she tried to intervene.

A had been serving a prison sentence for drunk driving when he began to suspect that B, with whom he was in a common-law marriage, was having an affair.

After being granted parole, A proposed that they formally register their marriage, but B refused. When she told him she would be spending the night at her mother's house, A went there drunk and carried out the attack — just two days after his release.

The court said the victims had suffered serious physical, psychological and financial harm, and that the victims and their families had repeatedly petitioned for a severe sentence. It added that A's conduct during his parole period showed no remorse, making him highly culpable. However, the court took into account that he admitted to the crime and had no prior record of violent offenses.
