Yeongyang-gun in North Gyeongsang Province announced Tuesday that Samsan-ri in Ibam-myeon, a flood-prone area, has been selected as a target site for the Ministry of Interior and Safety's 2027 comprehensive flood damage mitigation project.

The Samsan-ri area has repeatedly suffered flooding because poor drainage in low-lying residential and farmland areas worsens when water levels rise in the Banbyeoncheon stream. The area was designated a natural disaster risk improvement zone in May last year.

Following the site selection, about 26 billion won ($19.3 million) will be invested from next year through 2031 to carry out work including improvements to the Banbyeoncheon stream and Samsangyo bridge, installation of drainage pump stations and drainage facilities, and maintenance of small waterways.

The county expects the project, once completed, to significantly reduce flooding risks across roughly 43 hectares of residential and agricultural land in the Samsan-ri area.

"We will move swiftly on design and administrative procedures to ensure the project proceeds without delay, and do our utmost to make Yeongyang-gun a safer place from natural disasters," Yeongyang-gun County Chief Oh Do-chang said.
