Complex tax rules make it hard to understand your bill — new service helps residents estimate their property tax with ease
District strengthens guidance on September regular property tax payment period and methods
Geumcheon-gu has launched a property tax pre-calculator service to coincide with September's regular property tax payment month.
Property tax is levied annually, but the assessment criteria and calculation methods are complex, leaving many residents unsure how their bills are determined.
In response, the district office introduced the on-demand service to help residents clear up questions about property tax and check their estimated bills more easily and conveniently.
Residents can access the service by referring to the guidance notice sent alongside their property tax bill. Scanning the QR code printed on the notice links directly to the pre-calculator. Users select whether they qualify as a one-household, one-home owner, enter their home's publicly assessed price, and receive an estimated tax amount.
The district office also distributed the guidance notice — including information on the pre-calculator — to local legal offices and real estate agencies, given the high volume of property tax inquiries that arise during real estate transactions, it added.
Meanwhile, property tax is levied on those who in effect own property as of June 1 each year. In September, half of the residential property tax and the full land portion of the property tax are assessed.
The district office is dispatching tax bills promptly and accurately to help residents meet the payment deadline, while providing information on the payment period and methods through district facilities such as the district office and neighborhood community centers. It is also using a range of promotional channels, including a smartphone local tax notification service, the district newsletter, its website and blog.
District Mayor Choi Ki-chan said he hoped the newly introduced service would help residents understand and check their property tax more easily whenever they need to. "We are working to ensure residents can readily access tax-related information in their daily lives," he said, adding that the district would continue to develop a range of taxpayer-friendly services tailored to residents' needs.
