A four-day large-scale book festival at Mullae Neighborhood Park from Thursday to Sunday — featuring author book talks, daily busking performances and more
Yeongdeungpo-gu will host a large-scale book festival — the first Yeongdeungpo-gu Book Festa: Today Only Book Club — at Mullae Neighborhood Park from Thursday through Sunday.
Timed to coincide with September's National Reading Month, the festival is Yeongdeungpo-gu's signature reading-culture event, designed to give residents a relaxed space in the heart of the city to read, connect and unwind.
An outdoor bookshelf stocked with roughly 1,000 titles will be set up on site. The program also features author book talks, busking performances and hands-on exhibition booths run in partnership with local libraries — all centered on the theme of "books and libraries."
The centerpiece book-talk series kicks off Friday with "The Devil Reads Diligently," featuring Minumsa marketer Jo A-ran and author Kim Hwa-jin. On Saturday, Yeongdeungpo-gu District Mayor Jo Yu-jin and KBS announcer Jeong Yong-sil will lead a session titled "A City That Reads, a Yeongdeungpo That Thinks." The series closes Sunday with a lecture by cognitive psychologist and professor Kim Gyeong-il titled "In the Future, Happy People Are the Strong People."
Saturday will also see a Book Festa ceremony and celebratory performance held with residents through the "Stage Yeongdeungpo" program.
Throughout the festival, residents can take part in a range of hands-on booths and activities — making book-themed merchandise, exploring personal reading tastes through a book-curation experience, practicing calligraphy in a handwriting transcription club, and immersing themselves in outdoor reading at the "Today Only Book-Gazing Club."
"For National Reading Month in September, we have put together a one-of-a-kind book festival so that every resident can enjoy the pleasure of reading outdoors," District Mayor Jo said. "We will continue to do our best to build Yeongdeungpo into a city that reads, so that the joy of books becomes part of residents' everyday lives."
