Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power's Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant conducted a joint radiation emergency drill for Shin-Wolsong Unit 2 on Thursday in preparation for a potential nuclear power plant accident.

The drill brought together government agencies including the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission and the Ministry of Interior and Safety, as well as local authorities from North Gyeongsang Province and Gyeongju.

The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission organizes the joint radiation emergency drill in coordination with relevant central government agencies to protect lives and property and minimize environmental damage in the event of a radiation emergency.

The exercise was conducted under a scenario involving a complex emergency — including a reactor shutdown triggered by an earthquake, coolant leakage and a total loss of power.

Wolsong assessed a broad range of emergency response capabilities, including the activation and operation of its radiation emergency organization, resident protection measures, radiation monitoring, emergency medical response and accident management, as well as decision-making procedures involving the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, local governments and the nuclear operator.

"We will strengthen the response capabilities of our emergency organization members in line with crisis response protocols for radioactive material releases, so that we can respond swiftly and thoroughly to any emergency situation," Plant Head Kwon Won-taek said.
