"The average brushing time is 45 seconds, far short of the recommended two minutes. More than 3.7 billion people worldwide suffer from oral disease, yet toothbrushing has not evolved."

Oral care is the area Dyson set its sights on this time. "For decades, oral care has stayed stuck in a routine of squeezing out toothpaste, brushing, rinsing and flossing every morning and night," he said. "Even though many people know how important flossing is, they don't practice it as recommended because interdental cleaning is a hassle and takes too long — yet technological innovation had stood still."

Dyson spent six years researching how to consolidate this cumbersome oral care routine. A total of 661 engineers took part in the development.

In a hands-on test, the CameraJet's biggest advantage was completing brushing, water flossing and gargling with a single device. A routine that normally takes three separate steps was finished in about three minutes.

The MyDyson app showed which spots needed additional brushing. It let users check brushing pressure, interdental cleaning coverage and missed spots, helping them revisit areas they had skipped. The app also provides weekly and monthly oral care trend data, guidance for improving brushing habits, and educational videos.

The water flosser, which showcases Dyson's engineering, was also impressive. Unlike typical water flossers that emit a thin, straight stream, the CameraJet sprays cleaning solution in a cone shape. Dyson said the design cleans a wider area between teeth while reducing irritation to the gums. The spray remains stable even when the device is tilted, allowing it to reach interdental spaces that brushing alone tends to miss.

A camera system called Gap Optical Targeting, which runs on an AI machine learning algorithm, makes the precise spray possible. During development, Dyson trained the system on 470,000 images of teeth. A 100,000-pixel macro lens camera built into the device analyzes 28 images per second to locate target spots between teeth, then releases cleaning solution stored in the device's body.

The vibration function, a core feature of electric toothbrushes, has also been refined. The CameraJet's sonic motor vibrates 245 times per second to remove plaque. A technology called variable sonic vibration, which continuously changes the vibration angle during brushing, minimizes moments when the bristles stop moving. The design is meant to clean along the curves, gaps and gumline of the teeth.

The Live View feature, which links to the app to show the inside of the mouth in real time, was also useful. Footage captured by the camera could be viewed on a phone screen, making it possible to brush while checking areas that are normally hard to see in a mirror.

For an electric toothbrush used in the bathroom, hygiene management such as preventing limescale buildup is also important. A radio-frequency identification tag embedded in each brush head tracks usage history and signals when it needs to be replaced.

The CameraJet's suggested retail price is 749,000 won ($560), while replacement brush heads cost 49,000 won for a set of two.
