The Kospi reclaimed the 7,000 mark for the first time in 33 trading sessions.

The benchmark index closed at 7,051.64, up 97.12 points, or 1.40 percent, from the previous session, while the Kosdaq index rose 18.49 points, or 2.28 percent, to close at 830.37, according to the Korea Exchange.

Among the top two stocks by market capitalization, Samsung Electronics ended the session unchanged at 269,500 won ($201). SK hynix closed at 1,856,000 won, up 63,000 won, or 3.51 percent, from the previous session.

The gains reflect improved investor sentiment toward local chip stocks, following a 1.30 percent rise in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index on the New York stock market.
