Police in Jeju have caught a teenage tourist who fled the scene after crashing a rental car he had secretly driven without a license.

The Jeju Dongbu Police Station said Wednesday that it had opened a case against a high school student, identified only as A, 16, on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act by driving without a license.

A is accused of driving a rental sport utility vehicle without a license around 4:12 a.m. that day. He was driving along a roughly 5-kilometer stretch of coastal road in Sehwa-ri, Gujwa-eup, Jeju, that runs to Woljeong-ri.

The vehicle A was driving overturned on a curve. A climbed out of the car and fled the scene, police said.

Officers who responded to a report of the crash tracked down the driver through the rental car company and identified him as A.

The police investigation found that A, who was traveling in Jeju with his family, had secretly driven the rental car his parents had booked. Investigators confirmed he was not driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the case.
