A woman in her 20s died after being forced against her will into a fight, police said.
According to Yonhap on Tuesday, the Sangdang Police Station in Cheongju detained two people, including a suspect identified as A, on charges of joint coercion. They are accused of forcing a woman in her 20s to fight two teenagers, leading to her death.
According to police, A and her partner are accused of forcing B, a woman in her 20s, to fight two teenage girls, including one identified as C, one after another. The incident took place at a park in Yongam-dong, Cheongju, at around 12:20 a.m. on May 29.
B was assaulted by C and the other teenager during the fight, went into cardiac arrest and was taken to a hospital, where she later died.
A and her partner told police at the time that B had lost consciousness after falling during a game of tag. They said her face was pinned under the buttocks of a person following behind her.
However, police uncovered the truth of the case through an autopsy and a search and seizure of mobile phones. Investigators found that A and her partner had forced B and C to fight under a so-called "yacha rule." This occurred even though B and C had said they did not want to fight. The term is slang for a fight held without rules or protective gear.
