Sept. 5: government relief cargo given top priority for transport
Hanjin Group upholds founding philosophy of 'serving the nation through transport'
Korean Air sends 1,000 boxes of 1.5-liter bottled water
1,000 blankets separately provided to Nepal's government
Hanjin Group announced Tuesday that it has supported emergency relief efforts in Nepal's flood-hit areas, both by sending its own relief supplies and by helping transport the South Korean government's relief goods. The effort is in keeping with the group's founding philosophy of "serving the nation through transport" and its broader mission of fulfilling corporate social responsibility by connecting the world through transport and logistics.
Korean Air first sent emergency relief supplies it had prepared aboard flight KE695, which departed Incheon International Airport for Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu that afternoon.
The relief supplies provided by Korean Air consist of 1,000 boxes of Hanjin Jeju Pure Water bottled water (1.5 liters x 12 bottles per box) and 1,000 blankets. The water and blankets will be transported in two shipments, on Tuesday and Saturday.
The flood-hit areas are reportedly suffering from a severe shortage of drinking water due to the collapse of infrastructure caused by the massive flooding. The relief supplies will be delivered through Nepal's government to local flood victims as well as to hospitals, rescue sites and other locations in need.
Earlier, on Saturday, Korean Air and Hanjin — both Hanjin Group affiliates — combined efforts to urgently transport relief supplies on behalf of the South Korean government. The government's relief supplies consisted of about 10.5 tons of thermal blankets.
Given the urgency of the situation, Korean Air temporarily suspended existing cargo bookings and prioritized filling the cargo hold of its Kathmandu-bound flight with the government relief supplies. In addition, Hanjin, acting as the government's cargo forwarder, oversaw every step of the transport process.
"We extend our deepest condolences to the people of Nepal, who lost their everyday lives to this sudden natural disaster, and hope this support will be of some help, however small," a Hanjin Group official said. "Going forward, we will continue to fulfill our corporate social responsibility by fully leveraging our strengths as a global integrated logistics company to transport emergency relief supplies to disaster-hit areas at home and abroad, and to carry out various mutual-growth activities using our delivery and logistics infrastructure."
Meanwhile, Hanjin Group has taken part in the Community Chest of Korea's year-end "Hope Sharing Campaign," which is meant to usher in a hopeful next year, since 2001. Through last year, the group had donated a total of 57 billion won ($42.5 million) to the campaign, as part of its ongoing corporate social responsibility efforts and various social contribution activities.
