Incheon's Gyeyang-gu is launching a joint public-private petition drive to have the Daejang-Hongdae Line extension included in the government's fifth national railway network plan and its metropolitan transportation improvement measures.

The district said extending the Daejang-Hongdae Line into the Gyeyang and Cheongna areas is essential to the successful development of Gyeyang Techno Valley — the only third-generation new town without a railway plan.

"Gyeyang-gu's population and transportation demand are steadily growing thanks to its geographic advantages and various development projects, yet metropolitan transport infrastructure remains insufficient," Gyeyang-gu District Mayor Park Hyeong-u said. "Through this petition drive, we will show the will of Gyeyang-gu residents who want an expanded rail network."

The Daejang-Hongdae Line, with a total project cost of 2.1 trillion won ($1.53 billion), is a metropolitan rail project spanning 20 kilometers from the Daejang district in Bucheon through Hwagok and Gayang-dong in Seoul's Gangseo-gu to Hongik University Station in Mapo-gu. The line is targeted to open in 2031.
