Guro-gu launched its 17th Volunteer Wave Movement at a ceremony held Thursday morning at the district office auditorium, marking the start of the annual community service relay.
The Volunteer Wave Movement is a relay-style initiative designed to spread a culture of volunteerism across Guro-gu, with service activities passing from neighborhood to neighborhood like a ripple across water. The district has organized the event every year since 2010 to encourage residents to take part in voluntary community service.
This year's 17th edition opened with Thursday's launch ceremony and will continue with relay activities run by volunteer cooperation teams from all 16 neighborhoods from Sept. 8 to Sept. 22. Each neighborhood will offer service programs tailored to local characteristics and resident needs.
About 170 people attended the ceremony, including members of the 16 neighborhood volunteer cooperation teams and invited guests. Attendees watched a video highlighting last year's volunteer activities and took part in a flag-handover ceremony to officially pass the movement's banner.
All participants also joined a group performance, holding up a banner bearing the movement's slogan to reaffirm their commitment to volunteering.
Once a neighborhood completes its service activities, it passes the Volunteer Wave Movement flag to the next neighborhood, which then carries on the relay. The final neighborhood returns the flag to the Guro-gu Volunteer Center, bringing the movement's journey to a close.
Each neighborhood's activities will be coordinated with service programs tied to the upcoming chuseok holiday, with a range of sharing and volunteer initiatives planned to suit local conditions.
"When one person's small act of kindness leads to another, it becomes a powerful force for change in the community," Guro-gu District Mayor Jang In-hong said. "Through the Volunteer Wave Movement, we will build a warm Guro where sharing and service become part of everyday life."
