Support for 50 small everyday shops including pharmacies, restaurants, convenience stores and hair salons

Gwangjin-gu is rolling out a ramp installation support project to help people with mobility challenges — including wheelchair users, seniors and those with strollers — safely and conveniently access small local shops.
The project aims to reduce barriers caused by steps and high thresholds at shop entrances, creating a barrier-free environment where anyone can freely use everyday facilities.
Eligible shops are small commercial establishments built before 2022, ranging from 50 to under 300 square meters, with a focus on facilities residents use daily such as convenience stores, pharmacies and restaurants. Ramps will be designed and installed to suit the height and structure of each shop's entrance.
Installation costs will be covered in full. Shop owners wishing to participate can apply by phone to the Gwangjin-gu Disability Convenience Promotion Technology Support Center through Sept. 30.
Gwangjin-gu has been running the project since 2022 and has installed ramps at 320 small shops to date. The district plans to support about 50 additional locations this year. Through continued expansion of the program, the district aims to improve access to everyday facilities for people with mobility challenges and build a living environment that anyone can use comfortably, regardless of disability.
"Even a low threshold that most people step over without a second thought can be a major barrier for a wheelchair user," Gwangjin-gu District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho said. "We will carefully address the mobility barriers that remain throughout daily life, so that everyone can freely and conveniently go wherever they want."
