Public infrastructure and global water treatment solutions to join forces on AI water management and water-positive initiatives

Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-water) will partner with global water treatment solutions company Ecolab to drive innovation in water management for advanced industries, including semiconductors and data centers.

K-water said Friday that President Yoon Seok-dae met with Ecolab Chairman and CEO Christophe Beck on Thursday at the Han River Basin Headquarters in Gwacheon to discuss the direction and specific measures for cooperation in advanced industry water management.

Founded in the United States in 1923, Ecolab is a global leader in water resource management with a market capitalization of 100 trillion won ($72.4 billion) as of last year. The company leads process water treatment, cooling tower management, and water recycling and reuse solutions for advanced manufacturing sites such as semiconductor fabs and data centers. Beck also serves as co-chair of the Water Resilience Coalition, a global water security alliance under the UN.

The two organizations agreed that the current moment — when supply instability driven by extreme climate change is colliding with a surge in water demand from advanced industries — represents a critical window for determining the long-term sustainability of water management. They focused particularly on diversifying water sources beyond the existing dam- and river-centered supply system by utilizing reclaimed water and other alternatives, as well as securing adequate water quantity and quality through customized high-purity treatment. They also agreed on the need for coordinated global action to strengthen water resilience.

The two sides agreed to build a long-term cooperation platform. They plan to pursue a range of exchanges — including domestic and international collaboration on advanced industry water management, joint research and pilot projects to reduce carbon emissions through water and energy savings, and efforts to build high-tech water treatment capabilities — advancing concrete initiatives step by step, starting with areas where feasibility has been confirmed through regular working-level communication.

"This meeting is a starting point for two leading water companies from South Korea and the United States to understand each other's vision and capabilities and open the door to cooperation," Yoon said. "We will bring together the strengths of the public and private sectors to support stable water supply for future strategic industries and jointly drive innovation in the global water market."
