The National Nakdong River Biological Resources Center held its second freshwater animal joint survey workshop Thursday at a valley near Chorye Mountain in Daegu, bringing together citizen scientists and experts.

The event was hosted by the center and co-organized by Kyungpook National University and Daegu National University of Education, drawing about 40 participants including freshwater animal specialists and citizen scientists.

Participants took part in theoretical training on freshwater animal surveying and specimen preparation, field surveys and specimen collection, and hands-on practice in specimen observation and classification.

The field survey focused on valleys and wetlands near Chorye Mountain. Working alongside experts, participants surveyed a range of freshwater animals — including aquatic insects such as mayflies and caddisflies, as well as spiders — and learned field survey techniques by observing the characteristics and habitats of different taxonomic groups.

Ryu Si-hyeon, head of the center's Biodiversity Conservation Research Division, said the center would continue expanding public participation in biodiversity surveys and conservation efforts to raise wider awareness of the value and importance of protecting freshwater biological resources.
