AI working group with four institutions, including Dongbu Hospital and Kyung Hee University Medical Center, shares use cases and explores cooperation
District integrates AI into healthcare-welfare continuum to develop resident-centered services
Dongdaemun-gu held an AI working group meeting Thursday at the district office's planning situation room to expand the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare and welfare and strengthen inter-agency cooperation.
The meeting was the second of its kind, following a session held in April focused on transportation, safety and education. Participants included staff from Seoul Metropolitan Government Dongbu Hospital and Kyung Hee University Medical Center in the healthcare sector, as well as from Dongdaemun General Social Welfare Center and Dongdaemun Comprehensive Welfare Center for the Disabled. Relevant district departments — including the disability welfare, welfare policy and pharmaceutical divisions — also attended under the coordination of the Smart City Division.
Attendees shared the current state of AI and digital adoption at their respective institutions and discussed new areas for cooperation in healthcare and welfare, along with plans for moving forward.
The meeting proceeded through four agenda items: an overview of the AI healthcare-welfare working group's operating direction, a sharing of AI and digital use cases from participating institutions, a report on Dongdaemun-gu's ongoing AI projects, and a discussion on identifying joint projects and cooperation strategies. Talks centered particularly on ways to apply AI to integrated care services that bridge healthcare and welfare.
The district plans to translate the meeting's outcomes into concrete results by identifying new AI projects that reflect the expert input of each institution's staff and expanding inter-agency cooperation on existing initiatives.
In February, Dongdaemun-gu held an "AI Co-existence City Declaration" ceremony and formed the "AI Co-existence City Dongdaemun Governance" framework — a coalition of 11 institutions pledging mutual cooperation. Members span the education and youth sector, including the University of Seoul, Kyung Hee University, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Sahmyook Health University and the Seoul Eastern District Office of Education; the healthcare sector, comprising Dongbu Hospital, Kyung Hee University Medical Center and Sahmyook Seoul Hospital; and the public safety sector, with Dongdaemun Police Station and Dongdaemun Fire Station.
Thursday's meeting was an extension of that AI governance framework, convened to foster substantive cooperation and identify joint projects in the healthcare and welfare fields.
"AI is a vital tool for Dongdaemun-gu to transform how services are delivered on the ground in healthcare and welfare, and to make residents' lives more convenient," District Mayor Choi Dong-min said. "Drawing on the expertise and experience of our healthcare and welfare institutions, we will continue to create changes that residents can feel in their daily lives."
