Lotte Mart will begin selling the honeydew king melon on Saturday, offering limited quantities at all of its stores for three weeks — the first time a hypermarket has carried the product.
Each melon weighs at least 3.2 kilograms, about 70 percent larger than a standard honeydew, and has a sugar content of around 14 Brix.
Lotte Super first introduced the honeydew king melon last year, selling out its stock of 2,000 units ahead of schedule. In response, Lotte Mart secured 4,500 melons for this run, more than double last year's supply.
"Demand has grown for distinctive premium fruits with differentiated flavor and appearance," said Ahn Jeong-hee, a fruit merchandiser at Lotte Mart and Lotte Super. "We hope customers will feel free to try honeydew melon in a size and form they prefer."
