Hyundai Motor has moved into battery cell development, expanding its in-house technology capabilities beyond battery packs and management systems to include cell design. The automaker plans to apply its newly developed high-performance battery cells to an extended-range electric vehicle it will launch next year.
Hyundai Motor unveiled the in-house battery cells and its forward-looking battery technology strategy Wednesday at the 2026 CEO Investor Day held at Conrad Seoul in Yeouido.
The new cells were developed drawing on years of accumulated in-house design expertise. Compared with the high-nickel batteries the company has used to date, the new cells deliver more than twice the output while cutting charging time by 40 percent.
The cells will debut in an EREV set to launch in the first half of next year. An EREV uses an electric motor to drive the vehicle, with an internal combustion engine acting as a generator to recharge the battery when it runs low. The setup preserves the driving feel of a pure electric vehicle while reducing range anxiety.
The Santa Fe EREV will enter the US market in the first half of next year, built locally at Hyundai Motor's Alabama factory and combining two electric motors with the new high-performance battery. The target range is more than 600 miles (about 966 kilometers). A Genesis EREV is also planned for early 2027, targeting a range of more than 640 miles (about 1,030 kilometers).
The battery used in the EREV carries significantly less capacity than those in conventional electric vehicles. Hyundai Motor plans to keep battery capacity below 50 percent of a standard EV's while leveraging the high output of its in-house cells to deliver comparable performance and the driving feel characteristic of electric vehicles.
The in-house battery strategy extends beyond high-performance models. For volume-market electric vehicles launching next year, Hyundai Motor will use mid-nickel NCM (nickel-cobalt-manganese) batteries — a move aimed at reducing costs compared with existing high-nickel batteries while still securing adequate energy density.
Hyundai Motor said its mid-nickel NCM battery holds about 30 percent more energy than a lithium iron phosphate battery of the same volume. The approach is designed to strike a balance between driving range and cost in the increasingly price-sensitive mass-market EV segment.
The company is also enhancing battery management technology to extend service life. By upgrading its cloud-based battery management system, Hyundai Motor aims to extend average battery lifespan by 20 percent by 2028. Battery data collected from vehicles will be analyzed in the cloud to detect cell abnormalities in real time and enable preemptive responses.
Hyundai Motor has also expanded its in-house safety technology. Its newly disclosed thermal runaway prevention, or TRP, technology structurally blocks heat generated in a single cell from spreading to adjacent cells. Going beyond conventional approaches that merely slow heat propagation, the system incorporates a dedicated channel to vent high-temperature gases away from the battery pack.
TRP has been applied for the first time to the Genesis flagship electric SUV GV90, which was unveiled this month. Hyundai Motor said it conducted more than 200 repeated tests on both prismatic and pouch-type NCM batteries and confirmed that TRP can be applied regardless of battery form factor. The cloud-based battery management system serves as the first line of defense by detecting anomalies; TRP acts as the second, physically stopping heat from spreading.
Hyundai Motor's push into battery cell development is expected to reshape the division of roles between automakers and battery suppliers. The company has consistently broadened its in-house electrification capabilities, developing its own hybrid systems and the E-GMP electric vehicle platform. By extending that work to cell design, it has laid the groundwork to optimize battery performance, cost and safety simultaneously to suit each vehicle's characteristics.
Hyundai Motor is also differentiating battery types by vehicle segment — high-output in-house cells for performance EREVs and mid-nickel NCM for volume EVs. The medium- and long-term powertrain strategy unveiled Wednesday encompasses multiple battery chemistries, including LFP, mid-nickel NCM and high-performance NCM.
"The EREV represents the most ambitious product launch in Hyundai Motor's history," President Jose Munoz said. "It can serve as a realistic alternative for customers who are not yet comfortable with electric vehicles."
