China's consulate in South Korea has called for severe punishment of the perpetrator following the killing of a Chinese international student.

According to China's state-run Xinhua News Agency, the Chinese Consulate General in Busan said Tuesday that it had confirmed with South Korean police that a Chinese female student who had been missing for several days was found dead that day, and that police had arrested a man in his 30s on murder charges.

The consulate said it had called on South Korean police to launch a full investigation and impose strict punishment on the perpetrator, adding that it would provide consular assistance to the victim's family for post-mortem arrangements.

The woman, a Chinese student in her 20s enrolled in a graduate program in Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang Province, was found dead Tuesday — five days after she went missing — at the residence of a Chinese national in Hayang-eup, Gyeongsan.

The Gyeongsan Police Station arrested the man on murder charges and is investigating the case.

The case drew widespread attention on social media in both China and South Korea, where posts sharing photos of the presumed victim and requesting tips circulated widely.
