Yeongcheon City in North Gyeongsang Province is launching a half-price travel rebate program aimed at drawing overnight visitors to the population-declining city and revitalizing its local economy.

Under the program, running from September through November, domestic tourists who visit Yeongcheon will receive a 50 percent rebate on travel expenses in the form of mobile Yeongcheon Love gift certificates, the city said Wednesday.

Eligible participants must be domestic tourists whose registered address is outside Yeongcheon. Individuals can receive up to 100,000 won ($72), groups of two or more up to 200,000 won, youth aged 19 to 34 up to 140,000 won, and families of up to five people up to 500,000 won.

Residents of Gyeongsan, Cheongdo-gun, Gyeongju, Pohang, Cheongsong-gun and Daegu's Gunwi-gun are excluded from the program, as are foreign nationals.

To participate, applicants must register at least seven days before their trip and visit at least two designated tourist sites in Yeongcheon. Rebate claims must be submitted within seven days of completing the trip.

Applications and further details are available on the city's official website and the Yeongcheon Half-Price Travel website.

"We expect the half-price travel program to ease the financial burden on tourists while boosting local spending and energizing the regional economy," Yeongcheon Mayor Kim Byeong-sam said. "We hope many people will take an interest and participate so they can enjoy Yeongcheon's diverse tourism resources and local businesses together."
